TriVita -- What does your pet say about you?

TriVita -- What does your pet say about you?

How personalities of popular dogs and cats harmonize – or not – with their humans

Are you as bouncy as a Boxer?  As particular as a Persian cat?  While it’s said that some pets come to resemble their people over time (and vice versa), it’s the personalities that often determine the success of human-animal bonds.

When we choose companion animals, some psychologists think that we look for the traits that most reflect our view of ourselves.  Think of yourself as super-smart?  You may be most drawn to a Border Collie.  Take a laid-back, tolerant approach to life?  The popular American Shorthair cat might be your choice.

Of course, like people, individual animals have their own special personalities, regardless of bloodlines.  (Most dog-lovers know of a well-muscled Doberman who’s as aggressive as a pillow, or a Chihuahua who likes to fasten her teeth into the ankles of strangers).  Still, there are some general traits that tend to hold true.

Which breed reflects you best?  Whether your pedigreed pet was chosen after long research, or you just fell in love with a mixed-breed cutie at a shelter, the important thing is the love you share.  (Don’t forget: opposites attract!).  See how your Max or Misty fits in with your profile:

Which “Cat”-egory are you in?
Cats are a little tougher to categorize.  Although there are some 40 breeds recognized by the Cat Fancier’s Association, cats as a species tend to be more independent than dogs.  And, the large numbers of mixed breeds blurs the breed personality lines.  A mixed breed will have some of the personality traits of whatever breeds are in its ancestry.

Matching your cat with your personality
If your cat is a... -- You mi ght tend to be...

Persian -- Well-groomed, tailored, calm and slow to be provoked or upset

Maine Coon -- A “dog person” in disguise: playful, active, and fond of the Coon’s devotion and friendliness

Exotic -- Easy-going, not overly concerned with appearances, un-fussy

Siamese -- Intelligent, devoted to family and friends, unafraid to express yourself

Abyssinian -- Everybody’s pal: outgoing, friendly, active and always up for a game of cat-and-string

Ragdoll -- A bit delicate for a rough-and-tumble world: soft-spoken, not fond of being on your own

Oriental -- Verbal, mentally sharp, people-oriented

American Shorthair -- Easy-going, tolerant, unruffled by everyday challenges
