Credit cards don't just substitute for cash, they can also earn you reward points. "I use cards for their convenience and other benefits which I can milk," says Bhadauria. And you, too, can tap the monetary value of the points collected on your card.
How do you accumulate points?
Every time you swipe your credit card to make a purchase, you collect reward points. Typically, you get one point per Rs 100-250 spent. This, however, depends on the card and the bank. For instance, banks offer more points on co-branded cards. State Bank of India [Get Quote] gives one point per Rs 40 spent on its Gold Card and eight points per Rs 100 on its co-branded Tata Card.
The value of each reward point also varies across credit cards and banks. Says Sachin Khandelwal, head (cards), ICICI Bank [Get Quote]: "The value of a point can be anywhere between 30 paise to a rupee and is also a function of the merchant partner in case of co-branded cards." For example, the value of one point on the SBI Gold Card is 70 paise, while it is Re 1 on the SBI-Tata Card.
The limitation with most accelerated reward points on co-branded cards, however, is that they can be redeemed only against products and services of the partnered establishment.
One also needs to remember that points get accumulated against spends (that too, not all of them), not for cash withdrawals.
How to redeem points?
What to redeem on. Earlier, banks offered a limited catalogue of products. Plus the prices were very high and one couldn't negotiate on them. But now there is a laundry list of what you can do with the points.
For starters, there is the conventional catalogue that includes apparel, gadgets, jewellery, luggage items, and the like. You can also cash your points against gift vouchers. For instance, with HDFC Bank's [Get Quote] Gold Card you can get gift vouchers from Domino's, Cafe Coffee Day, Pantaloons, Westside, Lee, Music World and Landmark.
Going a step further, some banks have tie-ups with certain merchants where you can redeem points instantly. You don't have to contact the bank and get vouchers; you can pay using the points.
When the card is swiped, the reward points get reflected on the machine. So, if you have accumulated points worth, say, Rs 500 and you buy goods worth Rs 1,000, the merchant will offer you the choice of using your points for payment.
Some banks now offer air tickets on reward points, a feature that was earlier limited to co-branded cards. For instance, HDFC Bank has tied up with Jet Airways [Get Quote], Indian and Kingfisher Airlines to allow its card users to convert their reward points into air miles. The value of one air mile is usually equal to one reward point.
"The air miles required to get complimentary tickets would depend on the airline and the travel sector," says Parag Rao, executive vice-president, head (product and portfolio management), credit cards, HDFC Bank.
Some banks, like Bank of Baroda [Get Quote], also let you redeem your reward points against cash. That is, cash corresponding to your reward points are credited to your account. Deutsche Bank does the same on its Gold Card, but also offers a gift catalogue.
Procedure. You can redeem your points by filling up a redemption coupon which is there on banks' website. You could also use the phone banking option. For web-enabled credit card holders redemption can happen online. The banks can take anywhere between a week to a month to redeem the points.
How to bag the best?
With so many cards, each with multiple features, how do you know which one to pick. Bhadauria wants features, flexibility and convenience from his credit cards. "Of my five cards, I use HDFC Master Titanium card the most since I can pay the bills online and it gives me higher reward points for it. The card also offers many options to redeem my points," he says.
Figure out what you want. If you are a frequent air traveler, then an airline-bank co-branded card may work for you.
Another thing to note is the value of points. Says Nirupam Sahay, chief marketing officer, SBI Cards: "Points accumulated and their value is important, in addition to the wide choice of redemption options." For example, the co-branded ABN AMRO MakeMyTrip Go Card offers three reward points per Rs 100 spent. But, on purchases made on MakeMyTrip, the points range from 10 to 30. The reward points can be redeemed as cash back into your account.
Now, more cards are offering the cash-back option on reward points. Choose the card that offers you maximum cash-back on your frequent spends and offers an array of redemption choices.
* All banks display their products online and have compare tools to help you pick the best.
* Use these to compare the features and find the card that suits you best.
* Don't forget the expiry date. All your hard work would go waste if your points expire.
* However, most banks have started doing away with the expiry period.

Why Home Base Busineess Scam Are So Successful?
1. The Sick, Disabled, or Elderly: If you are elderly, ill, or have a disability, you may have problems landing a traditional job.
2. The Stay-At-Home Mother: Whether you have a spouse or you're single, you may be looking to supplement or create an income while raising children.
3. The Low-Income or No-Income Family: You or your spouse may have just lost your job, and you feel desperate and anxious to find work as the bills pile up.
4. The Person Without Higher Education: You're not stupid or dumb -- you just didn't go on to college or university.
To summarize, these scammers are often preying primarily on the sick, the disabled, the elderly, the unemployed, parents, and people without a lot of money.
The Top 10 Home-Based Business/Work-At-Home Scams
Note: These scams are not ranked by dollars lost or people scammed. In fact, there's nothing scientific about the list. It's just the ten home-based business scams we find the most disturbing.
10. Craft Assembly
This scam encourages you to assemble toys, dolls, or other craft projects at home with the promise of high per-piece rates. All you have to do is pay a fee up-front for the starter kit... which includes instructions and parts.
Sounds good? Well, once you finish assembling your first batch of crafts, you'll be told by the company that they "don't meet our specifications."
In fact, even if you were a robot and did it perfectly, it would be impossible for you to meet their specifications. The scammer company is making money selling the starter kits -- not selling the assembled product. So, you're left with a set of assembled crafts... and no one to sell them to.
9. Medical Billing
In this scam, you pay $300-$900 for everything (supposedly) you need to start your own medical billing service at home. You're promised state-of-the-art medical billing software, as well as a list of potential clients in your area.
What you're not told is that most medical clinics process their own bills, or outsource the processing to firms, not individuals. Your software may not meet their specifications, and often the lists of "potential clients" are outdated or just plain wrong.
As usual, trying to get a refund from the medical billing company is like trying to get blood from a stone.
8. Email Processing
This is a twist on the classic "envelope stuffing scam" (see #1 below). For a low price ($50?) you can become a "highly-paid" email processor working "from the comfort of your own home."
Now... what do you suppose an email processor does? If you have visions of forwarding or editing emails, forget it. What you get for your money are instructions on spamming the same ad you responded to in newsgroups and Web forums!
Think about it -- they offer to pay you $25 per email processed -- would any legitimate company pay that?
7. "A List of Companies Looking for Homeworkers!"
In this one, you pay a small fee for a list of companies looking for homeworkers just like you.
The only problem is that the list is usually a generic list of companies, companies that don't take homeworkers, or companies that may have accepted homeworkers long, long ago. Don't expect to get your money back with this one.
6. "Just Call This 1-900 Number For More Information..."
No need to spend too much time (or money) on this one. 1-900 numbers cost money to call, and that's how the scammers make their profit.
Save your money -- don't call a 1-900 number for more information about a supposed work-at-home job.
5. Typing At Home
If you use the Internet a lot, then odds are that you're probably a good typist. How better to capitalize on it than making money by typing at home?
Here's how it works: After sending the fee to the scammer for "more information," you receive a disk and printed information that tells you to place home typist ads and sell copies of the disk to the suckers who reply to you. Like #8, this scam tries to turn you into a scammer!
4. "Turn Your Computer Into a Money-Making Machine!"
Well, this one's at least half-true. To be completely true, it should read: "Turn your computer into a money-making machine... for spammers!"
This is much the same spam as #5, above. Once you pay your money, you'll be sent instructions on how to place ads and pull in suckers to "turn their computers into money-making machines."
3. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM)
If you've heard of network marketing (like Amway), then you know that there are legitimate MLM businesses based on agents selling products or services.
One big problem with MLMs, though, is when the pyramid and the ladder-climbing become more important than selling the actual product or service.
If the MLM business opportunity is all about finding new recruits rather than selling products or services, beware: The Federal Trade Commission may consider it to be a pyramid scheme... and not only can you lose all your money, but you can be charged with fraud, too!
We saw an interesting MLM scam recently: one MLM company advertised the product they were selling as FREE. The fine print, however, states that it is "free in the sense that you could be earning commissions and bonuses in excess of the cost of your monthly purchase of" the product. Does that sound like free to you?
2. Chain Letters/Emails ("Make Money Fast")
If you've been on the Internet for any length of time, you've probably received or at least seen these chain emails. They promise that all you have to do is send the email along plus some money by mail to the top names on the list, then add your name to the bottom... and one day you'll be a millionaire.
Actually, the only thing you might be one day is prosecuted for fraud. This is a classic pyramid scheme, and most times the names in the chain emails are manipulated to make sure only the people at the top of the list (the true scammers) make any money.
This scam should be called "Lose Money Fast" -- and it's illegal.
1. Envelope Stuffing
This is THE classic work-at-home scam. It's been around since the U.S. Depression of the 1920s and 1930s, and it's moved onto the Internet like a cockroach you just can't eliminate.
There are several variations, but here's a sample: Much like #5 and #4 above, you are promised to be paid $1-2 for every envelope you stuff. All you have to do is send money and you're guaranteed "up to 1,000 envelopes a week that you can stuff... with postage and address already affixed!"
When you send your money, you get a short manual with flyer templates you're supposed to put up around town, advertising yet another harebrained work-from-home scheme.
And the pre-addressed, pre-paid envelopes? Well, when people see those flyers, all they have to do is send you $2.00 in a pre-addressed, pre-paid envelope. Then you stuff that envelope with another flyer and send it to them.
Ingenious perhaps... but certainly illegal and unethical.

My Bailout Plan - Start a Home Business

Why starting a home business may be the best bailout plan available for you. Here's how I got there!
In a newsletter I received from The Research and Editorial Staff of The Association for Investor Awareness, Inc. (AIA), on September 25, 2008, they give no evidence that the "proposed bailout plan WILL work." There is a lot of skepticism on both sides of the aisle; proponents for the bailout plan say it's the same plan that saved Japan and the U.S. at various times:
"Many economists believe that Uncle Sam's $700 billion cash transfusion to our financial service industry will keep many essential firms alive to provide the credit the economy requires. The proponents also believe that we will eventually grow our way out of the hole, and everybody's books -including Uncle Sam's - will be balanced again.
There is precedent for believing that the bailout plan will work. Japan used it after its soaring real estate market collapsed in the 1980's and the country's banks went into a death spiral. Although the country subsequently endured a 12 year recession, it wasn't particularly hard on its citizens. In any event, the long recession was infinitely better than the depression that might have otherwise
been Japan's fate.
Big cash infusions also rescued the U.S. economy at various times in the past. For example, the Great Depression dragged on for over a decade until preparations for WW-2 flooded the economy with money. The theory goes that using the same technique early in a downturn can prevent it from starting in the first place. "(1)
Sounds like this is the only thing that will save the U.S. economy and prevent a depression, or at least, a deep recession. I don't know about you but I tend to lean towards the pessimistic side, the side of "we the people" have to take care of our selves. Uncle Sam, with their excessive spending and idiotic plans, has caused the mess we are in today. I'm not in favor of the government letting this country sink
into deeper debt because of the incompetency of the multi-millionaire corporate execs that made some bad decisions. I'm relying on my home business for financial security, NOT the federal government.
This proposed bailout plan, in my opinion, is like using a band aid to reattach a severed limb. It may slow down the bleeding, but I don't believe it will ever solve the crisis we are currently in, without some major surgery.
Additional quote from the AIA, "Critics of the Treasury's rescue plan believe the bailouts will only delay more bank failures and a sharp recession by a few months. The most vocal naysayers are adamant that the delay will make the inevitable problems worse. They also insist that the bailouts will put the Treasury in the same dire straits as the industry it is trying to rescue.
Furthermore, the bailout opponents argue, since the government will ultimately get the money from the American people, the rescue plan represents a gigantic case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. The critics go on to cite many examples where the hot potato game of passing the debt didn't end happily." (1)
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This is a free country (but maybe not for long); so the time to make a decision as a citizen of this (once) "great country". Are you going to sit by and rely on the government to take care of you, or are you going to take action and do something about it?
Although there is little that individuals can do that will have any effect on the national crisis, we can at least protect ourselves. Starting a home business may be the best choice you will ever make. You can sit back and wait to see what happens, or you can start a home business today, and begin controlling your financial future.

Most of these directories have feed subscriptions. Most of them are changing weekly and some daily on the sites which subscribe to these feeds from article directories. Some markets are very competitive and the content changes daily on their index page.
This means they use your article once and then change the feed on a rotating basis. The great thing about the article feeds from the article directories is that alot of sites that subscribe to these feeds mash them with other feeds that are related.
If you want more articles to appear at the same time on these sites, write related articles that can go into another related category. In your case, real estate investment and real estate residential.
Also, another exciting point is alot of the websites subscribing to article directory feeds allow their visitors to subscribe to their own mashed up feed on their website. even better, they submit this mashed up rss feed right back into feed directories, with their own content blended in.
Now you get a thousand new sites who never even subscribed to the article directories you submitted your article to, showing up at all these new sites. I tested this point last week on my seo testing blog. I found at some point my article was getting indexed 6,500 new indexed positions in Google alone for almost two days straight.

If you can not think of what to write about, subscribe to a few article directory feeds yourself and re-write each article from reading say a good six to ten articles yourself. Then make notes in your own words what you felt were excellent points.

- Many diet products and programs offer a quick, short-term fix, but there is no "magic bullet" for weight loss.
- When investigating weight loss products or programs, beware of high costs, pressure to buy special foods or pills, and fraudulent claims.
Diets
Approximately 50 million Americans go on a diet each year — yet only 5 percent keep the weight they lose off. Many trying to lose weight continually struggle to find an effective weight loss method. Unfortunately, there is no “magic-bullet”. The only proven way to lose weight and keep it off is by making permanent lifestyle changes. You must eat healthier, watch portion sizes and be active.
Even if you choose to use an over-the-counter weight loss product or participate in a weight loss program, the bottom line is that you still must eat fewer calories than you burn to lose weight. When selecting a weight loss product or program, gather as much information as possible. Beware of high costs, pressure to buy special foods or pills, and fraudulent claims.
Examples of Ineffective Diet Products
- Diet patches. Removed from the market by FDA in the early 1990s because they were ineffective as a diet aid.
- Magnet diet pills. Purportedly flush fat out of the body.
- Certain bulk fillers (such as guar gum) may cause internal obstruction.
- Electrical muscle stimulators. FDA may remove from market if promoted for weight loss.
- Appetite suppressing eyeglasses. Claim colored lenses project image on retina and decrease appetite.
- Magic weight-loss earrings. Supposedly control hunger by stimulating acupuncture points.
Weight Loss Products
Diet drink powdered formulas usually are mixed with a glass of milk and are substituted for one or more meals. Many users of these shakes report feeling constantly hungry and regain the lost weight when they give up the shakes. By relying on shakes, dieters follow artificial dieting methods and avoid learning how to work food into their lives.
Many prescription diet medicines have side effects and may not work for long-term weight loss. Over-the-counter pills containing the appetite suppressant PPA (phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride) can raise blood pressure. Over-the-counter pills containing ephedra may cause serious side effects, including dizziness, increased blood pressure or heart rate, chest pain, heart attack, stroke, seizure and even death. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking action to limit and/or ban the use of PPA and ephedra in over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements.
Herbalife Nutritional Program
- Characteristics: Replaces 2 meals a day with Herbalife ""shakes" and tablets.
- Strengths: One meal per day of regular food advocated. Shakes generally include nonfat dry milk.
- Weaknesses: Heavy reliance on Herbalife powders and tablets. Suggested rate of weight loss is too high (2 1/2 to 7 1/2 pounds/week).
- Comments: Weight loss is never "fun and easy" as claimed. Reliance on a specific product does not teach healthy, lifelong eating habits.
Mega-Thin/100 Formula
- Characteristics: Drink Mega-Thin formula. Eat according to specified diet. Formula contains "antifat weapon."
- Weaknesses: Diet de-emphasized. Behavior modification lacking. Emphasis on speed of weight loss.
- Comments: Formula probably contains an appetite suppressant.
Ultra Slim Fast
- Characteristics: Weight loss program recommends two shakes/day (powder and milk), a snack and a complete dinner of 500 to 650 calories.
- Strengths: Plan encourages regular exercise.
- Weaknesses: Promotes use of Ultra Slim Fast Frozen Entrees and snack bars. Does not teach good eating habits.
- Comments: Difficult to maintain weight loss once shakes are discontinued.
Nestlé’s Sweet Success
- Characteristics: Weight loss program recommends three shakes/ day (powder and skim milk), and a complete dinner of 500 to 650 calories.
- Strengths: Low-fat, nutrient rich foods are encouraged for dinner.
- Weaknesses: Does not promote healthy eating habits.
- Comments: Difficult to maintain weight loss once shakes are discontinued.
Diet Pills Containing PPA
- Characteristics: Take capsule once or twice a day. Follow diet plan that comes with capsules. Pills suppress appetite, but weight loss occurs from following diet plan. Most brands have a diet plan enclosed. Many of these are good diets.
- Weaknesses: Pills produce side effects that have not been adequately studied.
- Comments: Weight loss comes from following the diet, not from taking the pills.
Diet Pills Containing Ephedra (also called Ma Huang)
- Characteristics: Claims to promote weight loss. Take tablets daily. Recommended number of tablets varies depending on the product manufacturer.
- Weaknesses: Pills can produce potentially life-threatening side effects. Side effects have not been adequately studied.
- Comments: Ephedra is a central nervous system stimulant that suppresses appetite. Often combined with caffeine, which can increase risk for adverse side effects. Not proven safe or effective for weight loss.
Glucomannan Supplements
- Characteristics: Follow 1,000-calorie per day diet and take two capsules before each meal. Claim that capsules reduce appetite and decrease food absorption.
- Weaknesses: Claim weight loss of 1/2 to 1 lb/day. Sensational, nutritionally inaccurate presentation.
- Comments: Glucomannans are naturally occurring food thickeners. Not yet proven safe or effective. Weight loss probably comes from following the diet.
Chitosan Supplements
- Characteristics: Pills contain a dietary fiber derived from the shells of shellfish. Claim that taking the pills will reduce fat absorption, lower cholesterol and promote weight loss. Typical recommendations are to take 2 - 6 grams of chitosan per day, divided into doses of 1 gram with each meal.
- Weaknesses: May cause gas, bloating and diarrhea. At high intakes, may interfere with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
- Comments: Studies have shown weight loss occurs only when chitosan supplements are combined with a low-fat, reduced calorie diet.
Chromium Supplements
- Characteristics: Claims that pills will lower blood sugar, reduce body fat, control hunger, reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and increase muscle mass. Supplements are usually available as chromium salts which helps increase the absorption of chromium.
- Weaknesses: One form of chromium, called chromium picolinate, may cause adverse side effects, including anemia, memory loss and DNA damage.
- Comments: Roughly 50 percent of scientific studies have shown chromium has a beneficial effect, while the remaining studies have shown no effect.
St. John's Wort Supplements
- Characteristics: Claims that supplementing with St. John's wort will suppress appetite and promote weight loss.
- Weaknesses: Side effects may include gastrointestinal discomfort, tiredness, insomnia and mild allergic reactions.
- Comments: According to the Food and Drug Administration, St. John's wort has not been proven safe or effective for weight loss. Not recommended for children, or for pregnant or breast feeding women.
Green Tea Extract Supplements
- Characteristics: Pills contain polyphenols, which are extracted from green tea and are thought to be strong antioxidants. May help lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and enhance weight loss.
- Weaknesses: Extracts that also contain caffeine may lead to restlessness and/or insomnia.
- Comments: More studies are still needed to determine if green tea extracts are beneficial for weight loss. Choose extracts that have a "standardized polyphenol content". People taking aspirin or blood thinning medications should consult their doctor before taking green tea extracts, because green tea extracts may interfere with blood clotting.
Spirulina Supplements (Algae Tablets)
- Characteristics: 1) Take tablets as an appetite suppressant before meals, or 2) replace evening meals with 6-10 spirulina tablets, or 3) in a modified fast, take only spirulina and drink juice for several days.
- Strengths: Spirulina does contain essential nutrients and can be an acceptable food when used as part of a varied diet.
- Weaknesses: Taken in large amounts on top of an adequate diet, spirulina could lead to toxic levels of certain nutrients. Does not teach sound eating habits.
- Comments: Tablets are expensive.
Commercial Weight Loss Programs
Commercial weight loss programs such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutri-System and Diet Center usually offer a 1,000 to 1,500 calorie diet and individual or group counseling. Few participants succeed in keeping weight off long-term. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) brought action against some companies and is challenging their weight loss and maintenance claims.
Before investing in a commercial diet program, ask the company the following questions.
- How much, on average, do clients regain long-term?
- What is their maintenance and follow-up program?
- What rate of weight loss does the program aim for?
- Does the program emphasize balanced food choices and exercise?
- Are you required to buy specially formulated foods or supplements?
- What are the costs for membership, weekly fees, brand food, supplements and counseling?
- What are the credentials of those running the program?
- What are the health risks?
Check your local telephone directory for the programs available in your community. Prices may vary by location.
Diet Center
- Characteristics: Daily weigh-in and individual counseling.
- Strengths: Encourages exercise. Strong support in psychological aspects of weight loss.
- Weaknesses: Heavy reliance on supplements.
- Comments:No contract required.
Jenny Craig Weight Loss Clinic
- Characteristics: Weekly classes and individual counseling sessions. Both Jenny Craig preportioned foods and grocery store foods are used. Provides lifestyle management, motivation and nutritional information.
- Strengths: Emphasizes behavior education and practical eating skills. Expected weight loss 1 to 2 lbs/week. Exercise encouraged.
- Comments: Based on sound weight-loss principles, focuses on weight management, no wild claims or promises.
Overeaters Anonymous
- Characteristics: Group meetings. Twelve-step program deals with physical, spiritual and emotional aspects of overeating. No "diets," weigh-ins or lectures on food and weight. Primary purpose is to stop compulsive eating.
- Strengths: Encouraged to consult qualified professionals if interested in learning about nutrition or seeking professional advice. Provide good support structure.
- Weaknesses: Binge eating problems do not apply to everyone.
- Comments: No fees, voluntary contributions. Only membership requirement is a desire to stop compulsive eating.
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly)
- Characteristics: Diet based on a standard diet of regular foods. Group meetings for education and support. Groups organized locally, variation possible.
